Minority groups will get extra help in a bid to shield them from unemployment and the economic downturn, a minister has vowed.
Ethnic minorities, women, older people and the disabled will not be ‘left behind’ during the recession, Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell will pledge.
In a speech to Labour’s Black Asian and Minority Ethnic conference in Leicester today, Mr Purnell will say vulnerable groups were hit hardest by unemployment during previous recessions and will vow to prevent this from happening again.
He is expected to announce that the Government will work with the Equality and Human Rights Commission to look at whether ‘at risk’ groups were disproportionately affected by job cuts.
‘In the past, too many were left behind in bad times,’ Mr Purnell will say.
‘Ethnic minority workers suffered most in the Tory recessions,’ he told The Independent.
‘Just think of the waste of human potential. Whole communities were abandoned.
‘Families where no one then worked for generations. Unemployment among older workers was deeper and more prolonged … And we squandered the talents of a generation of disabled people – left at home, a life on benefits with literally no help or support.’
Mr Purnell said thousands of people who were ethnic minorities, older workers and the disabled had suffered.
‘Over half a million were pushed on to incapacity benefit and forgotten about,’ he said.
‘But, as much as the Tories might have wanted them to, they didn’t just disappear. We still bear the scars of those decisions in so many communities and households today.
‘In this recession, evidence so far is that its effects … are being spread across the population more evenly. But we will not take any chances.’
In the past year, the female employment rate has fallen by 0.3 percentage points, compared to the male unemployment rate which has fallen by 1.0 percentage point.

I’d really like to know why. What could possibly motivate these people -especially the ones with families?
It isn’t just labour, the lib dems and tories are every bit as bad.
do the apparatchiks think they will be power brokers in the one world government? Are the closet Muslims(extremely unlikely IMO)? Are they just nihilists who lust only for destruction of whatever order exists? Do they think this is the only way to stay in power?
I don’t have all the answers, but I know this.
‘They’ and ‘You’ are two different entities. They see you (us) as the peasant, serf, cattle class that they believe must be controlled, divided, brainwashed, looted and ultimately exterminated when they think they can get away with it.
It also works on compartmentalisation, these politico’s in the UK Govt obviously do not know the full picture, they are a combination of Fabian Socialists, Communists, Feminists and other Marxist ilk (which all leads to Communism). They are in their position because 1) the people are thick, mindless cattle, and 2) it is expedient for the global power brokers to have the country run with such collectivist, destructive ideologies.
Gorgon Brown and Friends are morons of elephantine proportions, and they do not want to give up their power, power they should have never had, considering they were never voted in and Brown refused to have one.
